Background:

OpenAI and SoftBank Group are jointly investing $1 billion in SB Energy to strengthen data center and power infrastructure as part of their Stargate initiative, the company announced on Friday. Each company will contribute $500 million toward the expansion, supporting the development of OpenAI’s 1.2-gigawatt data center site in Milam County, Texas.

SB Energy, owned by SoftBank, will build and run the data center and also use OpenAI’s services for its staff.

As more and bigger data centers are built, reliable power is becoming essential. Investing in energy ensures smooth operations.

SB Energy is setting up several data center campuses, with the first expected to open later this year. According to co-CEO Rich Hossfeld, the partnership speeds up the building of modern data centers and energy systems needed for the Stargate project and to strengthen technology infrastructure in the U.S.

The rapid expansion of AI infrastructure has prompted other major technology players, including Meta Platforms, to make unprecedented investments in power, cooling, servers, and chip technologies.OpenAI, facing increasing competition, is also dealing with rising operational and training costs as it works on improving its services.

The partnership between OpenAI, SoftBank, and SB Energy reflects a larger trend of combining technology development with energy planning. It shows how big investments and projects boost growth and innovation.
