Prime Highlights :

  • The Boring Company is in talks to raise about $4 billion at a valuation of roughly $20 billion.
  • The company continues to pursue underground loop projects in Nashville and Dubai despite unresolved questions about its business viability.

Key Facts :

  • Its valuation could rise nearly four times from the $5.7 billion level reached in the 2022 funding round.

Background :

Elon Musk’s tunnel-building company The Boring Company is reportedly looking for funding that will value the firm at approximately $20 billion. The firm is reportedly negotiating the raising of approximately $4 billion, although the deal has not been concluded yet.

The Boring Company builds tunnel boring machinery whose purpose is to cut down costs involved in underground construction. The company, which was separated from SpaceX in 2018, currently operates a transit loop beneath the Las Vegas Strip where passengers travel in Tesla vehicles to and from the Las Vegas Convention Center.

If completed, the new funding round would mark a major jump from the company’s 2022 valuation of about $5.7 billion, when it raised $675 million from investors including Sequoia Capital, Founders Fund, and Vy Capital.

Despite the increased valuation, there have been concerns regarding progress with the commercial aspect of the business. There have been several failed projects in Baltimore, Chicago, and Los Angeles, while the company has yet to demonstrate that underground mass transportation can bring profits.

The continued investment in the business depends on Musk’s past successes. Some backers who invested in his acquisition of Twitter eventually benefited after the platform was integrated into xAI and later connected with SpaceX.

The company is now developing a privately funded underground loop in Nashville and has announced a new Dubai project. The first phase in Dubai is expected to cost $154 million, while a larger second phase could require $545 million. However, the funding source for the Dubai expansion remains unclear.
