Delta Air Lines is introducing a new lower-priced fare for its premium cabins, giving passengers a cheaper way to book business and first-class seats while reducing some travel benefits.
The new fare, called Basic Business, will apply to Delta One long-haul business class. The airline is also launching similar basic fare options for first class and premium economy on selected routes. Tickets will go on sale in July for flights starting in September.
Passengers choosing these fares will receive seats assigned only at check-in instead of selecting them in advance. They will also earn fewer frequent flyer miles, pay fees to change or cancel tickets, and will not have access to same-day standby or confirmed flight changes. Basic Business passengers will also lose benefits such as airport lounge access.
Delta said the new fare is part of its strategy to offer more ticket choices for different types of travellers. The airline has been working on expanding fare options across its premium cabins after introducing similar pricing models in its main cabin.
The move follows a similar decision by United Airlines, which earlier introduced a basic fare for its Polaris long-haul business class. Airlines are increasingly dividing premium cabins into more fare categories to attract different customers while increasing revenue from higher-paying travellers.
Delta, the largest U.S. airline by profitability, is expected to report its second-quarter financial results later this week.
