Background
AIG has appointed Gavin Spencer as Head of Specialty, North America, expanding his responsibilities while retaining his current role as Head of Marine, North America. The move brings the insurer’s specialty and marine operations in the region under a single leadership structure.
Spencer joined AIG in 2024 and brings more than 25 years of experience across marine, cargo and logistics insurance. His career spans underwriting, claims, broking and surveying roles across multiple international markets. Before joining AIG, he held senior positions at Parsyl, Marsh and W E Cox Claims Group.
AIG said Spencer’s industry expertise and market knowledge will support the continued growth of its specialty insurance business across North America. The appointment comes as the company increases its focus on specialty insurance lines through a series of strategic investments and acquisitions.
In recent years, AIG acquired a significant stake in specialty insurer Convex and expanded its participation in the company’s underwriting business. The insurer also purchased renewal rights to selected commercial insurance portfolios and launched a collaboration to provide additional specialty insurance capacity.
The leadership change comes at a time when North America’s specialty insurance market continues to grow. Demand has increased across areas such as cyber, marine, transportation and excess-and-surplus insurance, creating opportunities for insurers with specialist underwriting capabilities.
Industry conditions have also become more complicated than before due to shifting trade patterns, higher cargo values and disruptions across the supply chain. These factors have increased demand for marine and cargo insurance solutions, making Spencer’s experience particularly relevant.
The appointment forms part of a broader leadership reorganisation within AIG’s North America Commercial Insurance business. The company is strengthening its management structure as it seeks to expand its specialty insurance operations and respond to changing market conditions across the region.
