Background-
American Airlines will build the largest lounge in its network at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, with the new Admirals Club covering more than 40,000 square feet.
The lounge will sit on the mezzanine level of the airport’s atrium, with wide views over the concourse. It follows a plan the airline announced last year to expand lounge space in Charlotte, including the airport’s first Flagship lounge.
Charlotte is American’s second-largest hub. It handles more than 650 flights a day at peak times and serves over 180 destinations in 27 countries. Nonstop flights link it to London Heathrow, so UK business travelers who change planes there will gain more room between flights.
Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden said the airline wants to give customers more space to relax, work and recharge.
The space will have separate zones for dining, working and resting. Plans include spa-style shower suites, bars and serveries. The interiors will reflect Charlotte’s tree canopy and textile heritage.
American has not set an opening date. It said construction will start this year. The airport’s current lounges will stay open during the work. They include the Provisions by Admirals Club near Gate A1 and the Admirals Club lounges in Concourse B and Concourse C/D.
American has not said who will be allowed in. Travelers should check entry rules against their ticket or membership.
